Settlement Services

We aim to support the healthy, evidence-driven integration of newcomers by working closely with participants, family supports, community organizations and government agencies.

Our settlement services at the Jane/Finch Centre supports the successful integration of new immigrant youth and families through cultural, educational, economic, social and political engagement. These services are developed using a client-centred approach and offer ongoing support to assist with transitional challenges. 

Our team provides support to Permanent Residents (PR), Protected Refugees (IRPA), live-in caregivers, Convention Refugees and temporary foreign workers.

We offer the following:

  • Orientation and information workshops

  • Needs assessments and referrals

  • Social and recreational activities

  • One-on-one solutions-focused settlement counselling

  • Translation and interpretation

We also provide support with PR card renewal, work permits, study permits, citizenship, passports, OESP, housing, Ontario Works, ODSP and more.

The settlement team speaks 13 different languages including: English, Spanish, Creole, Edo, Esan, Karen, Pidgin, Punjabi, Somali, Tamil, Twi and Urdu.

Our Services

  • Every Friday 10:30am-1:00pm.

    We offer newcomer employment support every Friday from 10:30am-1:00pm. Through this program, newcomers receive support with resume development, cover letters, online job searches as well as professional and interpersonal skill development. Workshops offered through this program aim to increase the employability of newcomers by providing them with soft skills and practical workplace knowledge. This program is offered to both adults and youth.

    Are you new to Canada and over 55 years old? Do you have questions about benefits, jobs, filling-out forms or applications? We offer drop-in support for newcomer residents over 55 years old at The Spot (inside Yorkgate Mall) during the last 2 Tuesdays of each month, from 1:00pm-2:30pm.

  • Every Thursday, 11:40am-12:40pm at Westview S.S.

    The English conversation circle program aims to help participants locate resources to help deal with daily language barriers and improve their conversational English through discussion groups. Participants will also have the opportunity to participate in events including movie nights, book reviews and presentations facilitated by settlement staff, peer youth workers and volunteers.

  • Our citizenship preparation classes assist participants in learning essential skills and requirements needed to pass the citizenship exam. The program includes 3 modules, with each module lasting 8 weeks. In each module, participants will participate in group sharing, lectures and mock examinations. Participants will learn about the Canadian economy, history, geography, politics, government structures and citizenship/foreign policies.

  • We offer various sports and recreation programs for newcomer youth between 13-29 years old. Our sports and recreation programs focus on youth social integration, physical literacy, inclusion and engagement and building transferable life skills. Different sports are offered throughout the year, having previously included soccer, skateboarding, snowboarding, basketball and more.
