International Women’s Day
The Jane/Finch Centre’s story is deeply rooted in the resilience and strength of the Jane-Finch community. In the 1970s, it was the leadership of women residents, advocates, and organizers—particularly women—that led to the creation of our agency in response to rapid urban development and the lack of social services. Their legacy of action continues to shape our work today.
This year’s theme, #AccelerateAction, is a call to urgency at a time when the rights and safety of women, trans, and gender-diverse people are increasingly under threat. For many, especially women of colour and those navigating the intersections of queerness, identity, and systemic barriers, the current climate is not just challenging—it is life-threatening.
A lot is at stake: women’s rights, trans rights, reproductive rights.
At the Jane/Finch Centre, where 70% of our management team are women, we remain committed to advancing gender justice in our workplace and in our community.
To us, Accelerate Action means:
Strengthening programs that empower women, girls, and gender-diverse people with economic opportunities, leadership development, and community support.
Advocating for policies that protect and uphold gender equity and safety for all.
Ensuring our services remain inclusive, culturally responsive, and accessible to those most impacted by systemic barriers.
Standing in solidarity with those fighting for a future free from violence, discrimination, and oppression.
Today, and every day, we honour the women, past and present, who have shaped our community and continue to push for a more just and equitable world.
